Belgium, meat producer in the heart of Europe

Belgium has a long tradition in meat export and occupies a leading role within the European meat production sector. Its location in the heart of Europe is key to its success.

Optimal logistics

Belgium’s central location ensures direct access to an extensive and modern transport network, with the Port of Antwerp and the Port of Zeebrugge—Belgium’s largest sea ports—as most important chains. Both seaports serve as a gateway to the world and are especially known for their good relations with Asia. Antwerp is Europe’s 2nd biggest port and is ranked 14th in the world.

Add to this Belgium’s favorable climate for meat production, and it will come as no surprise that Belgium has a long tradition in meat export.

Leading role in European meat production

Even though Belgium is a small country in terms of surface area, densely populated and surrounded by agricultural giants, it has more than stood its ground. Through their specialization, customized services and pioneering work in feed and food safety, Belgian meat suppliers have turned these initial disadvantages into a substantial advantage.

That’s why Belgium occupies a leading role within the European meat production sector. It accounts for 4% of the European meat production and as much as 1% of the meat production worldwide. This makes it the 8th largest producer in Europe.
